JPMorgan front-office tech MD that quit for Meta returns... to Wells Fargo

There's an abundance of tech talent on the market, especially from Big Tech firms like Meta, which have been making widespread layoffs. Some people who joined these firms from finance have, laid off or not, have moved back. One ex-JPMorgan MD has returned voluntarily, but isn't exactly back where he came from.

George Apostolov has joined Wells Fargo as its co-head of markets risk technology architecture in New York. He spent five and a half years at Meta in a variety of roles, but was most recently a technical lead for messaging privacy for the firm's consumer apps, including WhatsApp and Messenger. That team appears to be one that Meta values; it's been developing new advanced privacy features for WhatsApp, particularly focused on preventing messages from being seen by AI

Before Meta, though, Apostolov was a front-office tech MD at JPMorgan. He was the bank's global head of market risk and PnL technology, developing a platform that centralized all risk and PnL data into one platform. He also spent six years as an MD at Bank of America; he worked on the bank's risk management and pricing platform, Quartz. 

Apostolov therefore looks to be a coup for Wells Fargo, which has a thing for hiring ex-JPMorgan technologists; it hired one of its distinguished engineers, Constantin Gonciulea, to run its quantum computing team back in 2021, and has more recently been hiring some of the bank's AI team.

Apostolov left Meta of his own accord. He departed alongside 5% of the company, who were unceremoniously branded as "non-regrettable attrition." On jobs forum Blind, some of those laid off staff are struggling to find new roles; one said earlier this month that they've had "not much luck with hearing back, even with referrals." Another said the job search has been "unexpectedly tough."
