Standard Chartered tech directors in Singapore are leaving for a wealth fund

Working for a top sovereign wealth fund doesn't always necessitate moving to the UAE. Singapore's government wealth fund, GIC, has hired multiple senior technologists recently, showing an affinity for Standard Chartered in particular.

Freddie Moghal joined GIC last week as its head of end user infrastructure after a four and a half year stint at Standard Chartered in Singapore. She held multiple senior roles at the bank; she was head of engineering for mobile, print and desktop, then head of architecture and automation for workplace services and, latterly, the bank's head of cyber security technology.

Before that, she spent over 18 years wprking across various banks in London, including Credit Suisse, Barclays, Natwest and UBS. At Natwest, she was head of digital workplace platforms for the commercial and institutional bank.

She's not the only recent arrival. Zheng Xin joined GIC as a data scientist after three years at Standard Chartered where she was a director of data science. Xin also has a PhD from the National University of Singapore and was a research fellow in its solar energy research institute.

More technologists may soon follow, and not just because Standard Chartered is offshoring technology roles. Roughly a third of the fund's openings in Singapore are in its technology group, predominantly at VP level. Senior openings include both an engineering lead and an operations lead for data platforms and databases.
