Morgan Stanley quant MD leaves for Citadel before bonuses

It's never too late in the year to quit your banking job for a hedge fund, even during bonus season.

One of the few senior bank employees making the jump at this unusual time is Tyler Sorba, who's just joined Citadel as the head of trading for its equity quantitative research (EQR) team, from Morgan Stanley.

Before joining Citadel, Sorba was a lifer at Morgan Stanley, working there 17 years after joining as an MIT math graduate. He made MD in 2019 and was most recently head of trading in its equity derivatives automated market making team.

The EQR division at Citadel is made up of multiple small teams of quant researchers and developers, but its work isn't purely quantitative. It also takes a fundamental investment approach, and is focused on scaling the fund's equities portfolio. EQR team members tend to have a visible impact on Citadel's investments.

MDs moving pre-bonus season isn't unheard of; back in January, Goldman Sachs MD Pushkar Jha left for D.E. Shaw. In the past, moves around this time have meant high pay guarantees.
