Hedge fund Citadel hired Goldman Sachs' code-cracking quant MD for its power trading team
It's no secret that hedge funds, particularly Citadel, have an appreciation for Goldman Sachs engineers and quantitative strategists. Citadel's CTO, for example is Goldman's old CTO. Now, a leading commodities quant at Goldman Sachs is joining Citadel's fast-rising power trading team.
Benjamin McRoberts has joined Citadel as its head of European power engineering, based in its London office. He spent the last decade at Goldman Sachs, latterly serving as its EMEA head of commodities strats.
McRoberts already has experience defeating hedge fund rivals. We last reported on him in 2023, when he was a VP leading a team in 'Midnight Madness' a puzzle-solving mystery hunt loved by banking and hedge fund employees that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. He led 'Hyde & Seek,' a team of Goldman Sachs staff that was one of the top teams in the tournament for fundraising. It finished behind only one team, also led by Goldman people.
McRoberts was a VP when he led the Midnight team; he received an MD promotion the next year and has now found a senior role at a hedge fund the year after that. Impressing in Midnight Madness seems conducive to extreme career growth.
McRoberts is joining one of Citadel's most in-vogue teams, its power trading division. The hedge fund recently acquired FlexPower, a Germany-based power trading company, and recently hired power trader Tom Nutt into one of its lucrative London partner roles.
