Coinbase is paying $228k for a remote "based" Discord and Reddit user
Coinbase is hiring for its "based" new platform: Base. Based on what? Based on the blockchain. The platform is intended to be a low-cost option for people to build financial applications. Coinbase isn't just hiring blockchain developers for the team, however; it's offering over $200k salaries to Reddit aficionados.

Base is hiring a 'builder community lead' for the US, working remotely. The hire will be tasked with growing the platform's presence across different social media channels; specific examples given by the fintech include Discord, Reddit, Telegram, Farcaster and (ironically) "Twitter." In addition to posting content, the community lead will run live events, provide support to users and create grant programs for application builders. The role offers a salary range of $194k to $228k....
Jesse Pollack, Base's creator, said via Twitter yesterday that the networks built on social media channels can be "hugely valuable" but require the "right incentives" to allow their users to benefit from them. He also advocated for the tokenization of social media content.
Marketing roles focused on more niche communities are nothing new in crypto. Sei Labs previously tried to hire a "growth memelord" focused on growing its Twitter presence. If it has been able to find one, that person seems to have opted for an alternate job title. Base's community lead, meanwhile, is expected to have eight years' professional experience in tech and crypto startups, as well as an active social media following within crypto. Meme expertise seems more like a nice-to-have.
The community builder will earn better base pay than most of Base's technical staff. Base has 11 openings across engineering, data science and product: seven of these have a lower maximum salary than the community builder. The higher paid roles are all in product and each pay up to $244k salaries.
Pay at Coinbase is more than just salary, however. Coinbase paid staff $476.6k on average in 2024, more than half of which was in Coinbase stock. Some of that stock may soon be paid via Base itself; last month, Coinbase began issuing a tokenized version of its stock via the platform.
