Citadel Securities hired a UBS MD in Hong Kong amid APAC expansion
Citadel Securities has been operating in APAC since 2020. It launched there by offering US treasury and dollar interest rate swap products, but has grown considerably since then. As it positions itself to grow even further, the electronic market maker has hired an ex-UBS MD in Hong Kong to grow its relationships.
Savio Joseph has joined Citadel Securities as head of APAC institutional equity and equity derivative sales, a newly created role. He spent the last 14 years at UBS in Hong Kong, where he was latterly the bank's APAC head of flow derivatives and solutions sales.
Joseph will co-lead the firm's APAC sales alongside Kelly Wang and Shinchiro Kato. The former is Citadel Securities' APAC head of FICC sales (excluding Japan), while the latter is the firm's representative director for Japan. Building client relationships has been a key focus for Citadel Securities since the appointment of Jim Esposito from Goldman Sachs as its president, and the APAC franchise is thought to have built connections with various banks, asset managers and sovereign wealth funds in the region.
An impending shake up for Citadel Securities' team in Asia is the buildout of a team in China. The firm's APAC head, Vikesh Kotecha, said in June that the firm is applying for a securities license in the region and was looking to hire local talent to help it understand a nuanced market. Citadel Securities has made multiple hires in China since then, albeit at a more junior level.
Citadel Securities is hiring beyond APAC as well. Earlier this month it brought in William Oakley in New York as a senior software engineer; he spent the last five years working at Applied Intuition, an automotive engineering company working on self-driving cars.
