Lack of training prompts staff to look for new jobs

A total of 30% of those surveyed were so concerned about the lack of training that this had prompted them to look for a new job, according to the poll conducted by the recruitment firm Joslin Rowe.

Of those who had been on training courses, 93% said the training had been relevant to their job.

Seven out of 10 said the course had in some way improved their career development within the company.

Tara Ricks, managing director of Joslin Rowe, said: &quotIt is alarming that employers continue to be blind to the benefits of an on-going training programme.&quot

Employers who do implement training programmes are offering a mixture of external and in-house courses, according to the survey. These training courses were rated very highly by employees, with 91% of those who had been on them describing them as 'very good' or 'good'.

On-the-job training was most favoured at 77%, while traditional training courses rated 46%.

A recent survey for the Financial Times by the Association of Graduate Recruiters revealed that employers rated a willingness to train as the second most important key to success for graduates, exceeded only by interpersonal skills.

Joslin Rowe's findings suggest that keen would-be employees may be disappointed by the realities of training provided.
