XTX Markets is hiring engineers from Google and hedge funds

Alex Gerko's quant trading firm XTX Markets had a less-than-stellar 2023, with profits across its main UK entities slumping 25%. This year's volatility could see a bounce back for the firm, which has been hiring engineers to bolster its chances.

Recent hires include Linux engineer Henrik Bilar, who joined this week. Bilar spent the past decade at hedge fund Man AHL and its parent company Man Group. He was most recently head of information security engineering at the latter. Prior to that, he worked for RBC Capital Markets and BlueCrest.

Another recent hire, joining last month, is machine learning specialist Nicholas Chapman, joining as a research technology developer. He spent the past six years at Google, working on its search team and more recently on "supporting complex user journeys." Chapman also previously worked on real-time particle identification at CERN.

The firm hasn't only been investing in talent. It announced in April that it is building a 250 megawatt datacenter in Finland. The firm already boasts some of the most impressive hardware in the industry, with 20,000 GPUS.

XTX currently has nine full-time open roles, six of which are advertised in London. For students, it also has London-based internships in finance, risk and engineering.
