Standard Chartered made a curious emerging markets hire in London
As we reported a few weeks ago, BNP Paribas has been cutting emerging markets traders in London. Standard Chartered, however, is hiring them.
Standard Chartered has hired Deep Ranjan from ICBC Standard Bank as head of CEEMEA credit trading in London. Ranjan joined in early October after 2.5 years at ICBC. He previously spent nearly 10 years at Bank of America. The FCA Register shows him leaving ICBC Standard Bank in April 2024, so he's possibly been on six months' gardening leave.

Standard Chartered didn't immediately respond to a request to comment. It's a curious move. The former head of CEEMEA credit trading at the bank is understood to have been Sayeed Ahmed, who joined in 2021, also from ICBC Standard Bank. Ahmed has moved to another role in the bank.
Other recent CEEMEA credit hires include the likes of Anuj Gupta, a CEEMEA sovereign credit strategist from Goldman Sachs who joined HSBC in September. BNP Paribas, however, appears to be shaking up its emerging markets credit team, having trimmed Trang Nguyen, the global head of emerging markets credit strategy, Bo Bazylevsky, an MD in emerging markets trading and its London- and its New York-based heads of emerging-market credit sales.
