SocGen’s UK information chief left for intercontinental role at Canadian bank

If you’re a budding chief information officer (CIO) at a global bank, it’s generally better to go wider; from one country to multiple, to perhaps even the Eurasian landmass and change.

Stuart McDowell joined Scotiabank this week as CIO for Europe, Asia, and Oceania. McDowell joined the Canadian bank from SocGen, where he spent over 14 years, and was most recently its UK CIO.

McDowell spent six years at Credit Suisse before that as its head of European client connectivity. A decade before Credit Suisse, he was with Salomon Brothers; McDowell has been in bank technology for a long, long time.

SocGen is an interesting bank to be leaving at the moment. CEO Slawomir Krupa said at the bank’s annual general meeting in May that the firm had completed the bulk of its sell-off; it now had its eyes set on growth. It would seem apparent that the promotion was too good to reject.
