$106bn fintech Stripe's average pay in the UK: £260k
As fintech valuations plummeted during the early 2020s, there were notions that people joining companies like Stripe had missed the boat on making a lot of money from stock pay. This week, the company received the highest public valuation in its history, putting some of those qualms to bed. Payments firm Stripe is buying back stock from its venture capital backers, and if that leads to another opportunity for staff to cash in on their stock, its UK office are well-poised to benefit.
Stripe recently released accounts for its UK entity, 'Stripe Payments UK Limited' for the year ending 31st December 2024. The firm had a modest year of headcount growth, adding numbers in both its sales and engineering teams while reducing the size of its user operations team. Overall, Stripe grew from 278 people in 2023 to 288 in 2024. Despite a swanky new office, it's still smaller than it was in 2022, when it made major job cuts to 14% of its staff.
Stripe paid its staff a total of £260k ($347k) for 2024. This was made up of £167.5k in 'wages and salaries' as well as £92.4k in 'other compensation costs, including share based payments.' There was a total of over £26m ($35m) in 'equity-settled share-based payment transactions,' or stock paid to employees.
Stripe was valued at $70bn in mid-2024, and is valued at $106bn today. That doesn't mean the stock paid in 2024 is suddenly over 50% more valuable, though. Stock pay is issued in different tranches at different valuations, so the value growth isn't linear. The amount of stock Stripe paid its employees also halved year-on-year from 2023 to 204. This is because the fintech had a massive liquidity event in 2023 which resulted in multiple years of stock vesting all at once, making that year's payments unusually high.
Stripe is hiring for 20 roles in the UK, predominantly based in the office. This includes an opening for a head of solutions architecture for its revenue suite, which can earn up to £228k in salary alone.
