Standard Chartered's newest private banking MD got a promotion after leaving Hong Kong

Private banking hiring in Asia is on the rise right now, including in Hong Kong, where banks are preparing for an influx of money from clients in Greater China. Standard Chartered looks to be building out its team closer to the source with its latest hire.

Albert Yan has joined Standard Chartered's Chinese office as managing director, according to his LinkedIn. He spent the last 16 years as a relationship manager covering the Chinese market in Hong Kong across stints at HSBC and Morgan Stanley. He was most recently an executive director at the latter, meaning his move to China also came with a big promotion.

Yan isn't the only senior hire for its Chinese coverage team recently. Last month, it reportedly hired Ares So from BOCHK, who joined alongside two other colleagues. So was also Hong Kong based, but it's not clear whether any other new hires have been relocated.

Standard Chartered's global private banking team has been flying high in 2025. Bloomberg reported last month that the team onboarded 67,000 clients. In addition to the Chinese market, the bank has been ramping up its pursuit of Chinese nationals living in the UAE, and has adjacently been considering a revival of its Swiss private banking unit.
