The most pleasant FX guy at HSBC has gone away

Where is Sean Comer, the main man behind the scenes of HSBC's enormous FX business? Not at HSBC, it would seem.

Sources say that Comer, who was the COO for corporate sales within markets and securities services at HSBC, has disappeared. HSBC isn't commenting, but it's thought that Comer managed to negotiate a redundancy package. He's employed by the bank until the end of this month.

HSBC's FX business is large and successful and based around market making for its corporate clients. Euromoney ranked HSBC first for corporate FX in 2024 and the business generated nearly $4bn of revenues in the area last year.

Comer is one of the most experienced FX business managers in the market. He joined HSBC in 2016 after a long career at Deutsche Bank, Barclays, UBS and Citi. "He's earned his retirement" observed one colleague. Nearly twenty years ago, Euromoney described Comer as "well-regarded and ever personable".

He's taken his personable self elsewhere.
