Luigi Mangione's classmates are now in banking and tech jobs

Luigi Mangione is the name in everyone's mind today. The 26-year-old was arrested yesterday and charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione was a well-educated software engineer from a prestigious school, studying computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania. His classmates have since gone on to big things at major financial services firms and beyond.

Note: All names mentioned (surnames omitted for privacy reasons) have no association with Mangione or his actions, as stated in his 262-page manifesto discovered by police, where he said, "I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone."

Multiple classmates are now working at Goldman Sachs. One interned there while on Mangione's course, and is now an associate at the bank. Another studied computer science instead, but had multiple courses in common with Mangione, including 'Data structures and algorithms', which Mangione went on to be a teaching assistant for. She's now a quantitative strategist at the bank.

Another, a classmate at masters level, worked at Citi before studying at Pennsylvania He's since joined eCommerce giant Instacart. Another, who had multiple courses in common with Mangione, is currently working at Citadel. Another computer and information science student, now works at Meta, and interned at JPMorgan while on the course. 

For a senior group project, Mangione was also involved in creating 'CityRun: The User-friendly scenic route generation.' Fellow team members have since gone on to work at financial services firms like Bloomberg, while one had already interned at Amazon at the time.

Mangione graduated cum laude, and was in the top 12.5% of students in his undergraduate course. He avoided finance, though, instead interning in the gaming industry, a sector well regarded for its technologists by most other firms, and spent years at automotive technology firm TrueCar. It may not have been a stretch to believe he would have ended up at a major tech or financial services firm like his classmates in time. Instead, his societal impact is something altogether different.
