Barclays bankers lament the exit of an MD who's relaxing aged 38

Karan Shah did his time at Barclays. Having joined the firm as a graduate from the London School of Economics in 2007, he stayed at the firm for 17 years and dutifully moved to Paris when required in 2022.

2.5 years after moving to France as head of Barclays' continental syndicate hub, Shah says he's "taking some time out to rest and travel." He's aged around 38.

Writing on social media, colleagues are lamenting his exit. "It’s been an amazing journey. Not sure I’ve toured across Europe and beyond more with anyone else," says Thomas Flichy, head of financing solutions at Barclays in London. "What a great privilege to have you at the desk nearby and to put my clients in front of your views - always strong. We are missing you already!," says a director colleague in Paris.

Barclays is reportedly in the process of hiring Shah's replacement. The bank didn't respond to a request to comment.

Before he moved to Paris, Shah was Barclays' London-based head of fixed income syndicate for EMEA. His exit comes as banks regain share in the credit markets after private credit funds seized ground after the pandemic.

Barclays is cutting costs in its investment bank and elsewhere. It said in February that it plans to cut £340m of headcount costs from the corporate and investment bank by 2026. In May, it reportedly cut Shahzad Majid, a corporate bond syndicate manager who'd worked at the bank for over 12 years.

The current head of EMEA fixed income syndicate at Barclays is Yumi Yang, who was promoted last year.
