Boutique bank Lazard lures back MD in key sector
When people talk about leaving investment banking, they talk about exit opportunities. These are usually one-way; after all, who wants to come back to banking, once the sweet juice of reasonable working hours have been tasted? Some people do, however, love the game enough to return.

John Schoellerman re-joined boutique bank Lazard as a managing director (MD) earlier this month, based in its New York office. Schoellerman previously worked for the firm from 2014 to 2019, and was an MD and head of its medtech business before leaving. He spent the past six years as SVP of corporate and business development at Oxford Nanopore Technologies, a medical technology company spun out of the University of Oxford.
Lazard is pretty big on healthcare banking. It’s one of the three sectors that had its own section in its Q1 2025 investor presentation, alongside technology and energy. It’s hired for its team recently too, with the bank bulking up its European team in 2024, hiring Barclays veteran Will Thompson as an MD in October and Morgan Stanley retiree Michele Colocci as vice-chairman in May.
However, if Lazard is interested in investing in its healthcare teams, it’s not quite putting its money where its mouth is. While five of its 57 advertised jobs are in healthcare, only one is in New York – for a VP. Another two are in San Francisco, and two more are in Paris.
