HSBC replaced one of its most senior female technologists with a JPMorgan MD

HSBC just hired an Athenian

Earlier this year, HSBC lost one of its most experienced female banking technologists. UK chief information officer (CIO) Molly Chowdhury left the bank in May after a cumulative 19 and a half years (with a ten month stint at Citi in the middle). To replace her, the bank has hired an MD from JPMorgan that has spent a total of 24 years in banking.

Natasha Banse joined HSBC as its UK CIO last week. She spent the last six years at JPMorgan and was most recently head of product for Athena, the bank's cross-asset risk, pricing and trade management solutions platform. She was promoted to MD in 2022 while working as the bank's head of credit and public finance technology.

She's one of the most senior JPMorgan technologists to join HSBC since the bank hired Mario Shamtani, JPMorgan's international CIO, as its chief technology officer in March.

Before JPMorgan, Banse spent over a decade at Bank of America, predominantly as its head of EMEA credit electronic trading technology. She also had stints at Citi and Deutsche Bank, joining the latter as a graduate.

Alumni of Athena, JPMorgan's answer to SecDB at Goldman Sachs, are desirable in finance. Multiple have been seen leaving for hedge fund Citadel in recent years while a founding MD, Mark Higgins, instead started a fintech that sold for $560m this year.

HSBC, meanwhile, has been building out its London technology team. A few weeks ago, it hired Citi tech fellow Stephen Deakin to be its head of data platforms.
