HSBC's new investment banking MDs include a lot of old timers
What does it take to make managing director (MD) at HSBC? The bank's belatedly released list of new managing directors in its capital markets and advisory team, suggests it helps to have worked there a long, long time.

HSBC has promoted 16 people across its investment banking team globally this year. As the list below shows, they are most men working in debt capital markets (DCM). Many have been at the bank for going on two decades. This is a long time given that 12 years is the norm for making MD at most banks.
HSBC's 2025 MD promotions come as the bank is letting go of many of the MDs it promoted last year as it pulls out of M&A and ECM activities in the UK, Europe and the US.
HSBC is maintaining its activities in DCM, but its DCM bankers have been leaving. It's not inconceivable that HSBC has been deploying MD promotions to persuade experienced staff to stick around.
