Hedge fund Point72 can't stop hiring Goldman Sachs tech fellows
Goldman Sachs staff are often prime candidates for a hedge fund move, and technologists are no exception, but some hedge funds love Goldman tech alumni much more than others. At Point72, they've been proliferating since the arrival of ex-Goldman Sachs 'Tech Fellow' Ilya Gaysinskiy as CTO.
Three ex-Goldman Sachs 'Tech Fellows' have joined Point72 already this year. We reported on Rahul Garde in February, but two more have joined this month in the form of Yan Liu and Mayer Salzer.
Liu has joined Point72 as its head of database and messaging technology, based in New York. He worked for Goldman for 26 years, becoming a tech fellow and co-head of database engineering in that time. He left in 2021 for Citi, where he eventually became an MD and global head of CTI data services.
Salzer, meanwhile, joined the fund as its head of back-office platform engineering, also based in New York. He joined directly from Goldman Sachs, where he spent the past 19 and a half years.
Tech fellows (or distinguished engineers, as they're called at some banks) are thought to earn their titles more meritocratically than the loyalty-based banking hierarchy. They're held in high regard and are afforded a few perks. At Goldman, for example, you could find yourself on a tech-fellow taskforce working on a task for CTO John Madsen. This naturally makes them hard to keep, especially when an ex-fellow like Gaysinskiy is hiring.
