Citadel Securities hired Barclays' global head of investment sciences

Citadel Securities doesn't just want to compete with banks when making markets, it also wants to compete at providing insights to clients. The electronic trading firm has been releasing a series of market research papers as an alternative to traditional banking equity research, and just hired an ex-Barclays MD to support that.

Ryan Preclaw has joined Citadel Securities in New York as its head of content data science. In the role, he'll be using data science to optimize the strategy of Citadel Securities' market insights for clients. The firm has been releasing reports through ex-Goldman Sachs MDs Scott Rubner and Nohshad Shah.

Rubner and Shah have published 15 reports between them since the start of July alone, covering topics like retail investor sentiment. The most recent report, from Shah, predicts that the US economy will grow above trend despite the labor market faltering.

Preclaw spent the last 17 years at Barclays, which he joined as a graduate, and was most recently its global head of "investment sciences." In the role, he and his team would "write investment research using alternative data, machine learning/AI and advanced empirical methods," publishing 500 research projects per year according to his LinkedIn. He was promoted to MD while in the role back in 2021.

Curiously, Preclaw first joined Barclays as an MBA graduate working in M&A. He then transitioned to credit trading before assuming his investment sciences role.

Citadel Securities expanding its content strategy appears to be part of a broader wave of electronic trading firms coming out of the shadows. Jane Street, for example, recently released OxCaml (its production compiler for OCAML) into open-source after years of keeping its work on the language proprietary.
