Eisler Capital brought back its "great guy" COO who left in 2021

Eisler Capital Management has no shortage of employees who once worked for Goldman Sachs. But not all its ex-Goldman people are known for their friendly and approachable demeanours. Carey Nemeth seems to be an exception.

Nemeth has just rejoined Eisler, which he co-founded with fellow ex-Goldmanite Edward Eisler in 2021. He's spent the past few years running a family office in California.

Nemeth isn't returning to the Eisler job he left. He was once Eisler's London-based COO, but that job's now being done by Chris Milner, another ex-Goldman person who says the hedge fund is all about intellectual honesty. In his second stint at the fund, Nemeth will run Eisler's US business in New York City. This now employs 100 people, up from 12 when it was opened in 2022.

Nemeth's return will be welcome. People who know him say Nemeth is a "great guy" and "much loved." One describes him as "fair and balanced" and says Nemeth was equally liked at Goldman Sachs, where he worked until 2015 and was COO and chief of staff to the European trading business, a role that can be fraught with politics. "He's coming back to improve the culture at Eisler," suggests one, who says Nemeth is "very loyal" to the fund.

Eisler isn't commenting on Nemeth's return. Eisler Capital has had a difficult year, with performance flat through to October and reports of multiple portfolio manager exits amidst alleged disagreements with Eisler's Marmite ex-Goldman deputy CIO, Sam Wisnia.

While Nemeth is returning to Eisler, another ex-Goldman person appears to be leaving. Arun Dhar, the head of Eisler Capital's US office and a former partner at Goldman Sachs, is said to be stepping down from a management role, even though he will remain in an advisory capacity.

Dhar was only made partner last year. It's not clear why he's now been demoted, but Bloomberg reported recently that he'd been running an anonymous Twitter account called ElasticRetreat. This has since been removed, but some historic Tweets are still visible via Google, including one apparently stating: "I've fired dozens of employees over my career both young and old and this is NOT how you do it..."
