Bluecrest hired a 28-year-old Goldman Sachs rates trading ED, made him a partner

What does it take to become a "member"/partner at BlueCrest, the hedge fund turned family office run by Mike Platt?

Eight years working in rates trading at Goldman Sachs will seemingly do it. Sam Tabari, an executive director at the firm in London, who was an associate at Goldman as recently as 2021 has just joined BlueCrest as a member according to regulatory filings.

Tabari didn't respond to a request to comment. By our reckoning, he is 28 years old. The FCA register shows Tabari leaving Goldman on June 3rd and arriving at BlueCrest on June 10th.

Goldman's macro traders have a habit of leaving for BlueCrest. They don't always last. Simon Kingsbury, Goldman's former head of European swaps trading, arrived in 2019 and left again in 2021. Nishad Potdar, a rising star G10 trader at Goldman in London, joined in 2019 and left in 2021. Dan Bitel, another head of European swaps trading at Goldman, did something similar in the same era.

Nonetheless, BlueCrest exerts a draw. It's not just the pleasure of working with Platt, who rules his roost, but the pay. In the year to March 2023, average profit per partner at BlueCrest was £2.4m. Last year, that fell to £498k each. This year, it might be back up again: the Financial Times reported earlier this month that BlueCrest had returned more than 28% since January after betting against the US$.

Goldman has been hiring from hedge funds, too. Last month, it hired Daniel Dangoor from SPX Capital as its head of macro thematic trading.
