Bank of America's APAC leveraged capital markets co-head departs

To co-head or not to co-head has been a big question in banking as of late, with some firms committed to reducing joint leadership roles and others wavering on their previous commitments. For Bank of America, the choice seems to have been made for it within its APAC leveraged finance division.

Mike Hobby, APAC co-head of leveraged finance, left the bank this week to join MUFG in Sydney as its sole head of leveraged capital markets for APAC. He spent 14 years at BofA, based in Australia, only assuming his latest role back in 2023 during a broad reshuffling of the bank's leveraged finance team. Hobby previously worked at RBC, but started life as a consultant, with stints at EY and KPMG. 

Hobby's former co-head, Bhavik Pandya, is based in Hong Kong, and concurrently works as head of South and Southeast Asia DCM for BofA Securities. He will now assume sole responsibility of the APAC leveraged finance team. Bank of America declined a request to comment.

BofA handing sole responsibility of the team to its Hong Kong leader adds more credence to the claim that Hong Kong is the place to be for APAC banking jobs right now amid a boom in financial activity. Bloomberg reported yesterday, for example, that December is on track to be the best month for Hong Kong IPOs in four years,
