Citi poached a JPMorgan macro MD in Singapore after JPM tried to keep him

Citi has had a vacancy at the top of its Asian macro business ever since Matt Long, its head of FX institutional sales and solutions for APAC, left for Coex in April. It's now filled that gap with a big name from JPMorgan.

Citi is understood to have hired Anand Goyal, JPMorgan's head of APAC MacroX and real money sales, into Long's role. Citi isn't commenting, but it's thought that Goyal will be reporting to Cecile Gambardella, Citi's Hong Kong-based head of markets sales and to Sam Hewson, Citi's London-based head of FX sales.

Goyal spent two decades at JPMorgan after initially joining as an associate in the technology team in 2004. He became an MD in 2023.

Long's seat was popular and it's thought that Citi interviewed widely for the role before settling upon Goyal. It's also thought that JPMorgan didn't want Goyal to leave and offered him a large counteroffer to stay. JPMorgan has not confirmed this, however.

It's not clear how much Citi offered Goyal to induce him to join. The supposition is that it was US$1m, at least.
