A JPMorgan product head in London left to build a startup with a crypto market making MD
In JPMorgan's investor day this year, the bank touted Kinexys Liink, one of its key crypto products, as a "first-of-its-kind information exchange network for [the] global payments ecosystem." As the bank reshuffles its crypto leadership, one of the people that led product for Liink decided to try his luck elsewhere.
Abbas Ali spent three years as head of product development for Liink at JPMorgan. He stepped away from its crypto team over the past few years to work on the European expansion of JPMorgan's International Consumer Bank (ICB), but has decided to return to the sector by founding a startup. His co-founder, Ruchir Gupta, was most recently MD and head of treasury and options trading at crypto market maker GSR. The specific focus of their startup is still under wraps, but Gupta's LinkedIn says it will be "building at the intersection of DeFi and fixed income." The pair have already raised an undisclosed amount in seed funding.
Ali told eFinancialCareers that he initially left JPMorgan's crypto team for its ICB because he "wanted to do something more real," noting that "banks are slow to do things in the blockchain space." The ICB, in contrast, is home to Chase UK which has seen a lot of success in recent years and is now being rolled out in Germany and other European countries. Ali said that, with digital assets picking up, he "saw too much opportunity in the space," and had to jump back in.
JPMorgan recently announced a leadership reshuffle at Kinexys. Edinburgh-based Kara Kennedy has become co-head alongisde Singapore-based Naveen Malella. Mallela used to jointly lead the division with Tyrone Lobban, who tragically passed away earlier this year, according to a MuchLoved donation page. Kinexys Liink has recently been seen hiring for a new team in Singapore.
