Banks are tackling diversity, ageism excepted.

"I want to work for 10 more years. Banks won't hire me"

I've had a long career in finance. I've worked on both the buy-side and the sell-side and I am not ready to retire. I want to work for another decade, but no one will hire me. 

I'm one of many. There is a whole load of people like me, with years of experience, who are simply left out of the market. 

I'm not looking for an enormous pay check. I've walked into interviews and said words to the effect that I'm willing to work a few rungs further down the ladder, but I'm consistently frozen out. When you reach my age, banks are simply not interested. It's the unspoken form discrimination.

I still have a lot to add: I am loyal; I have no intention of bolting for more money somewhere else; I am highly capable with a deep skill set; I am tech-savvy. I try my hardest to project an image of youth and vitality: I am learning Python and updating my skill set.

I declined many of the offers after having to deal with a 20 something interviewer who was late or asked stupid questions that weren't job related and wasted my time only to find out they didn't want to pay anything and who obviously didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground .

I understand that you cannot keep coasting on the skills you had five years ago.  

It's only when banks hire people like me that the hiring market will be fully healed.  In the meantime, I hear a lot of talk about diversity from banks, but I don't hear any reference to them hiring older people like me. - The only context in which ageism is addressed is in terms of disability: as you get older, you're more likely to be disabled. Banks say they will hire disabled people. They never say they will hire people who are old.

    Sadly ageism is alive and doing very well here in America. It never has ceased to amaze me this obsession that people are finished by the time they're forty. People in their 40's have valuable experience from living real life that a 20 something doesn't have yet. I once had a job interview in which i was asked the following query about five minutes into the interview and I recall it like it was yesterday I was just getting out into the workforce and the interviewer wanted all kinds of experience of which I had little. I asked him the following question: Everyone wants experience and yet nobody gives you a job to get the experience, where does one get the experience everyone demands and as I recall he was speechless. At the time I was in my 20's out of school yet they wanted all kinds of experience that would have taken ten years to acquire yet they wanted somebody in the early 20's, go figure. The nuns were really good ramming math down my throat and according to this dolts math I would have had to begin working when i was 10 years old. No wonder so many companies age going down the drain!

    Beats me why ageism is acceptable but racism and pretty much any other 'ism isn't. #OldLivesMatter

    2 words for you: Join Fidelity. I'm nearly 60 and started there last year. Plenty of folks with some salt in their pepper among the thousands being hired. It'll keep you young!

    Some smart firm is going to realize that the talent pool of unloved white male candidates is unparalleled in terms of depth and quality.

    It is only going to get more so as these candidates are shunned for being the wrong gender, race and/or sexual orientation.

    agreed. I've an excellent CV but can't get a job either. made it clear that I would be OK with a job a couple of rungs below my last coporate title but no game. get plenty of interviews but nobody is willing to pull the trigger.
