JPMorgan's CEO is not a fan of homeworking.

Jamie Dimon's four reasons why working from home isn't great

JPMorgan still has a lot of its staff working from home, and it will still have plenty of people working from home in future. Writing in the banks' shareholder letter that prefaces its new annual report, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon says the bank will in future only maintain seating space for 60% of its employees.

Just 10% of JPM staff will work from home permanently in the future, says Dimon.  Some work will work in a hybrid fashion, both at home and in the office. Others will working in either offices or branches all the time.

Like David Solomon at Goldman Sachs, Dimon doesn’t seem a big fan of homeworking. In today’s letter, he provides four reasons why:

  1. ‘Performing jobs remotely is more successful when people know one another and already have a large body of existing work to do. It does not work as well when people don’t know one another.’
  2. ‘Most professionals learn their job through an apprenticeship model, which is almost impossible to replicate in the Zoom world. Over time, this drawback could dramatically undermine the character and culture you want to promote in your company.’
  3. ‘A heavy reliance on Zoom meetings actually slows down decision making because there is little immediate follow-up.’
  4. ‘And remote work virtually eliminates spontaneous learning and creativity because you don’t run into people at the coffee machine, talk with clients in unplanned scenarios, or travel to meet with customers and employees for feedback on your products and services.’

This being the case, it’s hardly surprising that JPMorgan – again like Goldman – is one of the only banks committed to offering in-office internships as much as possible this summer. It’s also hardly surprising that Dimon says JPMorgan is still building its new headquarters for between 12,000 and 14,000 employees in New York City. Working in the office in banking is far from over yet.

    I have huge respect for the heads of JPMC and Goldman, but I hope they are not missing the power factor of sitting on the top corner office and watching the thousands of minions working under them🙂

    It’s clear u guys have not been in IB. It’s not like other finance jobs. Endless zooms are dreary. The long hours are infinitely better with colleagues. 100% agree with Dimon.

    What ridiculous comments. It’s obvious non of u know what working at an investment bank is like. If you think it’s like any other finance job, you IQ is even lesser than I thought.

    Every single one of these points is nonsense. People are more effective and happier over zoom. This is all about one man's ego

    Executives are used to the "swoon" factor in the workplace - they walk around and people swoon over them. In their corporate lives they're celebrities. Working from home robs them of this ego stroke, in the pandemic world they're walking around masked like everybody else with no workplace to got to where everybody swoons.
