Disquiet at Bank of America as employees told to work in office

While other banks prepare for some employees to work from home, there are complaints at Bank of America that staff in the global banking and markets division are being asked to work in the office despite concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

In a memo seen by eFinancialCareers, Bank of America says "While we have executed our business continuity plans, we have not moved to working from home and employees should continue to come into the office. Please talk to your manager if you have questions or concerns."

Bank of America declined to comment on the memo. It's understood that the bank has instructed any employees who feel unwell to stay at home, and for those returning from the most affected countries to work from home. The memo states that all non-client facing and international travel is banned unless approved by a member of the management team, that travel between offices is restricted, and that access to trading floors will be available only to employees working on those particular floors. It states too that BofA is in the process of moving "certain critical functions (eg. trading floors) to partial split locations."

The memo is signed by an HR representative in the U.S..

While BofA is clearly not requesting that employees who think they may have the virus should come to its offices, insiders are complaining that they want to work from home as a precaution. "Other banks are already allowing home working, but Bank of America has decided to be a pioneer and ask us to go into the office," says one, who claims that requests for home working to managers are being rejected.

Bank of America is not thought to have had any cases of the virus. Goldman Sachs cleaned an area of its lower Manhattan office last week after an employee came into contact with an infected lawyer at a 'temple service.' It didn't close the office, but said that employees who felt 'uncomfortable' were able to go home if they wanted.

In the memo, BofA says "transaction critical" travel is still permitted, but only if it's within the country in which an employee is based and not in Mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Iran or Italy.

I work in a retail banking center with heavy foot traffic because the centers around us are closed due to the pandemic & on top of that, in my state it’s at its peak right now with new cases & we’re close to a hospital where healthcare workers come in for assistance. I was told by HR that I CANNOT double mask. BofA says they care & they doing their best in keeping their employee safe but they have an issue with something so simple as double masking ?
I’m taking an extra precaution in double masking so I don’t get sick & bring this home to my young kids. The masks they provide are useless because when put on, the sides are open & not sealed, how effective is that? HR didn’t want to hear it, I was told it’s bank policy that we can’t double mask, why is there a policy put in place for extra precautions ? I’m not refusing to wear their masks, I’m wearing them & also wearing another one over it to enclose the sides so I feel safer at work. With what’s going on with the pandemic cases, This is really sad & disappointing.

My son works for BOA and is required to go to the office. This is absurd and reckless to say the least and this practice must end. If everybody else must adhere to safe practice by staying home, how come the banks are exempt.

Bank of America is not providing enough protection to its employees. Many Bank of America’s across the US don’t have hand sanitizer in stock, no surgical masks are being provided, some are even running low on hand soap and gloves. The bank continues to put pressure on sales goals. The bank is pressuring employees to make service calls with the emphasis of inviting clients to come in the bank for a financial review (ignoring state laws to stay at home). The purpose behind a financial review is to find products or services that earn the bank revenue. Currently the bank employees are obligated to assist clients perform transactions that involve; Sharing IPads, key boards, pens, papers, some sitting in enclosed offices with clients that are coughing, sick with cold, or clients that have come in contact with some one with the virus. The bank is not taking proactive nor protective measures to protect workers/ clients from exposure to the virus. Personal protective equipment it’s much needed to reduce workers exposure.
