RBC's head of equity research now free to run his bar chain

Rufus Grantham has been liberated from his job at RBC Capital Markets. Sources say the Canadian bank's head of European and APAC research has left the building. Grantham himself is declining to comment beyond the fact that he is on gardening leave.

This is not the first time we have written about Grantham. As we noted in 2016, he has more to his repertoire than equity research: he also owns a bar operating company called BloodandSand Ltd, which operates the Hide Bar in Bermondsey, cocktail bar Wise & Partners in the City of London, and the Arbitrager in Throgmorton Street.  Grantham has been the owner of BloodandSand since 2006.

His exit from RBC comes as the Canadian bank last week put around 40 people at risk of redundancy across equities, research and investment banking in London. Kevin Smith, the bank's head of M&A for EMEA, subsequently decided to leave of his own accord.

This isn't the first time that Grantham has had time on his hands. Before he joined RBC he had three years out of the market after leaving Nomura in 2013. He spent that time on eclectic projects like mentoring start-ups and developing a platform to measure people's emotional reaction to video content.

RBC declined to comment.
