ExodusPoint filling out its ranks with new middle and back-office hires

It’s now been roughly a year since $8.5 billion hedge fund startup ExodusPoint officially started trading client assets. As we’ve chronicled a few times, Michael Gelband’s firm has been extremely active in the market over the past year, mainly targeting portfolio managers in New York and London. After doubling the size of its New York office just nine months after launching, ExodusPoint has spent the last month filling in the gaps.

The firm just hired two cloud administration specialists in New York: Sonny Baillargeon, the fund’s new global head of infrastructure who recently held similar roles at KCG and Citadel, and Pritam Dahake, a longtime cloud solutions architect in and out of financial services. Thomas Kurtzman, a former vice president at J.P. Morgan, joined as head of trade surveillance in April, as did longtime buy-side compliance officer Jonathan Hantler, most recently of Oz Management and Bridgewater Associates. Joining the other fresh faces is quant developer Tanzim Hoque, who came over from UBS last month.

While the hiring of portfolio managers seems to have slowed recently – the initial goal was 30 PM-led teams, which it may have already hit – ExodusPoint over the last month has added an equity trader on both sides of the pond as well three market data analysts in New York. ExodusPoint has so far kept details about its performance under wraps, but the firm hasn’t taken its foot off the gas when it comes to filling seats, particularly in New York as of late.
