Expansionary U.S. hedge fund now hiring juniors in London
Last time a U.S. hedge fund with big aspirations hired a lot of juniors in London, it ended badly. - Balyasny dangled large pay packages in the direction of interested in 20-something bankers, who duly rushed to join, only for many to find that they were let go again a year or so later. Surveyor Capital is not Balyasny, but it does seem to be setting out its stand for a few junior hires in London.
Surveyor, which is an equities unit managing capital for Ken Griffin's enormous hedge fund, Citadel, hired at least two London juniors in the past month. Joseph Royston-Bailey joined from M&A boutique Centerview Partners and Sebastian Yoshida joined from Och-Ziff Capital Management.
The firm is also understood to have made two senior London hires, who are starting later this year. They are Fabian Blohm as global COO, and Richard Northridge as a portfolio manager. Blohm was previously co-head of GLG Partner's European long-short equities strategy and head of portfolio analytics at GLG, and Northridge was formerly a managing director at Och-Ziff.
It's not clear whether Surveyor plans to make additional hires, but the firm - which has around 30 portfolio managers globally - is unquestionably growing in London. Last September, Sean Salji, the former senior portfolio manager for global equities at Citadel in Europe became head of Surveyor Europe. In January, Business Insider reported that London was a growth area for Surveyor, which was trimming a few people in New York City.
