Citadel Securities is still doing some big hiring, on both sides of the Atlantic

It's a new year, but Citadel Securities' old hiring spree is continuing unabated. Two years after it began hiring heavily from banks and other funds, the market maker continues stocking up trading and quant talent.

In the past month, Citadel Securities hired Julien Treves, former commodity index trader at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Kevin Shi, former quantitative trader at Sun Trading, Christopher Panek, former desk lead of S&P options market making, and Tal Broda, ex-vice president, engineering at Mesosphere, Inc. Treves is based out of London. Shi, Panek, and Broda joined Citadel in Chicago.

With over a decade of experience, Treves joined as a commodity and derivatives trader. He started his career with a year-long internship at Calyon in 2007. In 2009, he joined BNP Paribas, where he started out handling trading and market making on retail listed products and transitioned to becoming a commodities derivatives trader, before leaving for Merrill Lynch in 2015.

Shi, a Princeton University graduate with over 12 years' experience, joined Citadel as a quantitative researcher. This is his second stint at the Citadel name. - He started his career at Goldman Sachs in 2005 and left to join the separately run Citadel Investment Group in 2006. Shi shifted to Sun Trading in 2009, where he served as co-head of U.S. equities trading for over three years. Later on, he worked as a quantitative researcher at various firms including Radix Trading, Vatic Labs, and Headlands Technologies, before going back to Sun Trading as a quantitative trader in 2015.

Meanwhile, Broda, who is an MBA from the University of California, Berkely and a Columbia University alumnus, comes with 20 years' experience and will serve as head of architecture at Citadel Securities. He started his career with NewChannel, Inc. as a senior software engineer and project lead in 1999. His later stints included working at Istante software, Oracle, and SOASTA, where he joined as vice president, engineering in 2009 and rose to become chief technology officer in 2014. He left the firm a year later to join Mesosphere.

Panek has joined Citadel as the head of index options market making, leaving Optiver after nine and a half years. He joined Optiver as a trader in 2008 after completing general engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He rose to become its desk lead of S&P options market making in 2011 and a junior partner in 2013.

The latest appointments follow some significant hires at Citadel Securities in 2017. In June, for example, Citadel Securities hired Joe Mecane, formerly head of electronic trading at Barclays, as head of execution services. Mecane started work  there in September.
