Former Credit Suisse rainmaker leaves senior job at boutique investment bank

The former head of UK investment banking at Credit Suisse, who joined boutique investment bank Gleacher Shacklock as a partner and senior adviser in 2008, has just departed.

Piers de Montfort is a senior deal-maker with decades of experience in the City, having previously held senior roles at both Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley. He signed up to Gleacher Shacklock as a partner in 2008, five years after its launch by former Dresdner Kleinwort banker Tim Shacklock.

De Montfort officially left Gleacher today, according to a filing on UK Companies House. His profile is no longer accessible on the bank’s website.

De Montfort moved to Credit Suisse in 2004 to head up its UK investment banking division. He came from Morgan Stanley, where he held a number of senior roles over 17 years at the bank.

Before his departure in 2008, he was moved across to a chairman of UK investment banking at the Swiss bank, following the appointment of former Goldman Sachs banker Sebastian Grigg to run its UK business. Grigg, a well-known rainmaker, became the vice-chairman of investment banking at Credit Suisse before quitting last year to launch his own advisory boutique.

Gleacher has 45 employees based in London. Most recently, it hired Deniz Akzul, a former partner in distressed debt and event driven investments at hedge fund Bluecrest Capital Management. It also brought in Pratyush Chakravarty, a former partner at Nordic investment bank Pareto Securities, in September.

Its most recent accounts, for 2016 published in August this year, show that it made £7.8m from revenues of £15.9m, down from £16.7 in 2015. It had 36 employees last year, and paid them £4.1m, or an average payment of £113.9k. It also had 23 partners, the highest paid of which received £751k.
