A senior RBS investment banker has just joined a train company

If you’re looking for a route out of a senior investment banking role, it helps to stick close to what you know.

For Will Cuthbert, who has spent the past five and a half years as head of transport, energy, infrastructure and industrials at Royal Bank of Scotland, that specialist expertise is…trains.

Cuthbert has just become head of treasury at passenger train company Eversholt Rail after 20 years working in various senior investment banking roles.

The bulk of Cuthbert’s career has been spent at either ABN Amro, which was acquired by RBS in its final act of aggressive pre-crisis expansion in 2007, or at RBS in various senior roles. He was head of strategic equity principal investments as RBS consumed ABN Amro, and has been head of pulp, paper, packaging and white goods as well as his last role leading its transport business at the Scottish bank.

RBS’s investment bank has been gradually shrinking since the bank’s near-collapse and subsequent government bailout in 2008, and was recently renamed as NatWest Markets as part of its plans to comply with ‘ringfencing’ regulation. Its latest accounts suggest that it now has just 1,200 employees in the division.
