This small broker is hiring top staff from Bluecrest, Brevan Howard and RBS

Senior investment bank traders, who have gone on to top roles in some of the UK’s biggest hedge funds, have quietly been signing up to a small agency execution and clearing platform.

Peter von Maydell, the former global head of foreign exchange strategy at Credit Suisse who has been working as a portfolio manager at BlueCrest Capital Management for the past four years, has just joined Coex Partners as a strategist. He also has five years' experience working as a portfolio manager at Deutsche Bank and before this spent nearly five years at Brevan Howard.

Coex Partners is a broker set up in 2014 by John Ruskin, the former global head of financial futures and options at Newedge and Alex Gerskowitch, who was a managing director and trading director at the firm. In July last year, Coex partnered with Tullett Prebon so that it could use its infrastructure.

Coex has been landing some other big hires over the past few months. As well as von Maydell, Coex also hired James Fauset, a former FX portfolio manager and strategist at Brevan Howard as head of its FX agency business. Before joining Brevan, Fauset was head of FX hedge fund sales at Goldman Sachs.

On its execution desk, Coex has also just hired Marc Taylor, who previously worked as a director in FX sales at ANZ, Jefferies and Credit Suisse. Peter Russell, its head of FX execution who joined in July last year, previously worked at Millennium Global Investments. Dan Zalewski, a former director in fixed income algorithmic trading at Societe Generale, has also joined Coex’s execution team.

Coex has a history of poaching senior markets staff in large investment banks. Its head of derivatives sales, Daniel Read, joined from Royal Bank of Scotland where he was a managing director within its FX trading team early in 2016. Tony Slater, who also works in derivatives sales, joined after 16 years at Societe Generale where he was a senior director within Newedge.
