Changes at the top of Barclays investment bank technology team

Call it new chief information officer Mark Ashton-Rigby making his mark at Barclays after joining in August, or call it a case of Barclays' continued cutting of senior figures in its investment bank. Either way, some of the bank's top technologists have moved on in the past month.

Philip Freeborn, who was head of operations and technology at Barclays, left earlier this month. Freeborn joined Barclays in January 2006 from UBS, where he was CIO for the investment bank in the US. His decade-long career at the British bank spanned a period as CIO for the London investment bank, a spell as head of a cost cutting group and time as COO and head of integration at Barclays Africa and COO for Barclays Wealth.

We understand that his role will not be replaced.

Barclays declined to comment.

Meanwhile, Ian Buchanan, Barclays' former CIO who was replaced by Ashton Rigby in May, has now officially left the bank. Buchanan made his exit in September and has decided to go it alone rather than join another large investment bank. He's just started High Ground Consulting, which offers strategic advice to both start-ups and more established firms within technology and financial services.

Elsewhere in the senior tech ranks at Barclays, Matt Mansour, who was a managing director and head of application services at Barclays, has just been promoted to chief technology architect in London. Mansour only joined Barclays in April 2015. He was previously head of business transformation and digital at GE Capital in Australia.

Mark Ashton-Rigby is the new group CIO at Barclays, having joined in August. As we reported in May, he left J.P. Morgan - where he was chief information officer for its corporate and investment bank in New York - and spent three months on gardening leave before joining Barclays. Once Ashton-Rigby is established in his new role, further hires from J.P. Morgan are expected.
