The most interesting new hires at U.S. hedge funds at the start of spring
While investment banks tighten their belts and make cuts, some hedge funds in the U.S. have continued to add staff as the weather is warming up on Wall Street and spring is in full swing. These are the most interesting recent hedge fund hires.
Tiger Legatus Capital Management
Earlier this month, New York-based Tiger Legatus Capital Management hired Nathan Morin as a principal. Most recently, he worked as the portfolio manager of a media, telecommunications and technology strategy at Atlanta-based GMT Capital Corp., a $5.5bn value-oriented, long/short hedge fund. The latter hired him directly out of Columbia Business School, where he got his M.B.A. after working as an Accenture consultant.
Warlander Asset Management
Eric Cole founded the New York-based hedge fund Warlander Asset Management this year with the backing of his former boss, David Tepper, the billionaire founder of $20bn Appaloosa Management. Alex Ginzburg, formerly a partner at MatlinPatterson Global Advisers, is the new firm’s head of research.
Warlander recently hired Jesse Freedman, who previously worked as an analyst at Greenwich-Conn.-based Strategic Value Partners, RBS and Moelis & Co.
Davidson Kempner Capital Management
Pito Chickering has joined New York-based Davidson Kempner Capital Management, which has more than $25bn in AUM, as a healthcare analyst. Most recently, he was an analyst at Kingdon Capital and before that an equity research vice president focusing on healthcare services at Deutsche Bank.
Alyeska Investment Group
Most recently a partner and the director of research at New York-based Three Corner Global Investors, Jeff Eisenstein has joined Chicago-based Alyeska Investment Group. His previous experience includes seed-stage venture capital firm K2 Media Labs, TPG-Axon Capital, Level Global Investors and Morgan Stanley.
Select Equity Group
New York-based Select Equity Group, which manages more than $14bn across both long-only and long/short equity strategies, has hired Danil Subkhankulov as an analyst. Most recently, he worked at SAB Capital, and before that, was a private equity senior associate at Cerberus Capital Management and an investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan.
Owl Creek Asset Management
New York-based Owl Creek Management, which specializes in an event-driven and fundamental value long/short investment strategy in equity and debt markets, recently hired Rishav Puri, most recently an analyst at GoldenTree Asset Management, a corporate and structured credit markets specialist. Prior to that, Puri worked as an analyst at Linden Advisors, a senior associate at JLL Partners and an analyst in the leveraged finance group at Bear, Stearns & Co.
EastBay Capital
Last month, New York-based EastBay Capital, which was co-founded by portfolio managers formerly from SAC Capital and Diamondback Capital, hired Benjamin Abrams as an analyst. Most recently, he worked at Aikeon Capital Management. Previously, he was an equity research associate specializing in the Internet sector for Deutsche Bank and, prior to that, worked in a similar role at RBC Capital Markets.
