Meet 8 new analysts at Barclays Investment Bank. What makes them special?

Do you want to work for Barclays' Investment Bank? What kinds of people does it really hire onto its graduate programme?

In the U.K., Barclays has just registered its new crop of graduate hires with the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Who was in this elite group? What helps differentiate them from the rest? We've looked at eight of Barclays' recent hires and pulled out (what we consider to be) their special features. Clue: if you want to join Barclays' graduate programme in the front office, it probably helps to have a raft of other internships before you even apply for a summer analyst position. It probably helps to study finance. And everyone on our list was a summer analyst before joining Barclays full time.

1. Roxanne Mehdyoun

Role at Barclays: Analyst, Equity Advisory team, Equity Capital Markets (ECM)

Selling points: Roxanne amassed a lot of finance work experience before starting her full-time role. She was a spring intern at Barclays. She was a spring intern at Credit Suisse. She also spent four months as an 'analyst intern' at Barclays in the penultimate year of her university course. She graduated from Cambridge in economics and was a member of the finance and investment club and the banking society and the Cambridge Union.

2. Elena Petrishyna

Role at Barclays: FX sales analyst

Selling points: Elena speaks French, Russian and English proficiently (meaning she can potentially sell to French, Russian and English clients). She took a masters of science in financial markets at Edhec Business School and graduated in the top 5% of the class. She had plenty of prior sales experience before joining Barclays - first as a saleswoman for French handbag company Lancel, then as a sales and marketing intern for SocGen's private wealth team, and then as a summer intern for Barclays' FX sales team.

3. Sarah Amelia Rainey

Role at Barclays: Healthcare M&A analyst

Selling points: Rainey was also an outstanding student. She graduated from Glasgow University with a 1st class degree in accounting and finance and a host of awards for (among other things) being the 'best performing third year honours student', the 'best overall second year accounting student' (Deloitte Prize), and achieving the top accounting mark for her year group (the 'University of Glasgow Prize'). She too had plenty of prior work experience: she was a spring intern at Nomura and Deloitte before becoming a summer intern at Barclays. And she seems to be a semi-professional violinist.

4. Peter Jurik

Role at Barclays: Natural resources analyst, Investment Banking Division (IBD)

Selling points: Much like the analysts hired by Goldman Sachs, this year, Jurik benefits from an international education. He's studied at Bentley University in Massachusetts and IE Business School in Spain, where he graduated in the top 10% and 5% of his class respectively. His team won first place in the 'Fed Challenge' in 2010. Like the rest of Barclays' analyst hires, Jurik interned at the bank while he was at university, and interned elsewhere before that. He spent four months as an intern at Richmond Park Partners, an independent investment bank set up by veteran bankers Scott Mead and Andrew Pisker.

5. Pavneet Chadha

Role at Barclays: Investment banking analyst in the equity derivatives team. Focused on Strategic Equity Derivatives and Convertible Debt. 

Selling points: Chadha is an economics graduate from UCL in London. During his time there, he was head of sponsorship for the bank's investment society. A Singaporean national, he spent nearly two years as a Platoon Commander in the Singaporean Armed Forces. He completed two finance-related internships before the summer internship at Barclays that led to his full time job...

6. Uthishtan Ranjan

Role at Barclays: Analyst in the financial sponsors (private equity clients) team, IBD

Selling points: Uthishtan graduated from Imperial College London after achieving 'outstanding' A Level results.  Before joining Barclays' financial sponsors group, he spent a year and a half working for Abraaj Private Equity in the Gulf, making him an unusual creature - someone who quit private equity for banking.

7. Megan (Yuqing) Zheng

Role at Barclays: Analyst in the investment bank

Selling points: Zheng speaks English and Chinese fluently. She interned at Hong Yuan Securities, RBS and Deloitte before interning at Barclays. All those internships were in China and Hong Kong, although Zheng joined Barclays in London, suggesting the bank is open to hiring non-EU nationals into the City.

8. Emma Kuusela

Role at Barclays: Debt capital markets analyst in the investment bank

Selling points: Kuusela speaks Finnish and English fluently, which is probably a selling point as recruiters often complain about the difficulty of finding bankers who are Nordic language speakers. She has a first class degree in Politics with Economics, Political Science and Government from the University of Bath. And she graduated with merit from a Masters of Public Adminstration at the London School of Economics. Before interning at Barclays, she completed a one year industrial placement at Morgan Stanley and spent eight months as an assistant sales manager at Nordea financial markets in Helsinki.
