Where to situate yourself on New Year's Eve if you work in banking

The year is pretty much over. If you work in banking it hasn't been entirely great, but nor has it been entirely bad. There's one (or maybe two) more nights to go before 2014 and all its tapering. So where should you spend New Year's Eve 2013-14? These are our suggestions, based upon your stage of life.

New Year's Eve for the financial services party person

If you're young and without the encumbrance of infants or teenagers, there are plenty of options. These may also apply if you're older, hedonistic, and have avoided procreation.

1. The Box, London

What? A den of debauchery 'Theatre of Varieties' in London's Covent Garden. On New Year's Eve, the Box tells us that it will be, 'bringing old-school Hollywood glamour (with a Box twist) to Soho for one night only.'

2. Bacanal at Baku, London

What? A night run by the private event company Bacanal, which was set up by ex-UBS banker Diego Lijtmaer.  Lijtmaer's New Year's Eve event is at Baku, an Azerbaijani restaurant in Sloane Street. There will be entertainment and music across three floors, plus as much as you can eat and drink.

3. Hakkasan, Las Vegas

What? A five day party culminating in a New Year's Eve night with DJ Calvin Harris. You can eat in the restaurant and then head to the club.

New Year's Eve for the 30+ finance professional without encumbrances

1.  Jose Ignacio Beach, Punta Del Este, Uruguay 

What? Punta Del Este is South America's less-discovered equivalent of San Tropez according to  Lijtmaer. In the Uruguayan summer, the town fills out with bankers and socialites from Europe and the U.S. There are beautiful beaches, grassy dunes, boutique hotels and elite sorts of nightclubs.

Cost: High. You'll need to get there, you'll need to stay there, you may want to party.

2. Annabel's London

 

What? Annabel's is a members club, so this won't be open to everyone. It also tends to attract a crowd on the further side of 30+, so you probably won't want to attend if you don't have any silver hair. However, this is a good option if you want to find very senior bankers who haven't left the City until January 7th. On New Year's Eve Annabel's will offer a 'celebratory four-course dinner' accompanied by a jazz band.

3. Anywhere in Verbier 

What? A ski resort with nightlife thrown in. Prince Harry was there last New Year's Eve. He went to a new nightclub Public.  So did James Blunt. Probably best avoided if you don't like British royalty and balladeers. Alternatively, there's Hotel Farinet, which runs a nightclub at which Richard Branson has allegedly been seen dancing on the bar.

Cost: High. You'll need to get there and a night at the Hotel Farinet alone will cost you CHF375 on New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve for the finance professional with family in tow 

If you have children and are compelled to have them with you on New Year's Eve, you may want to try a hotel. In this category, we suggest...

1. The Hotel Belvedere in Grindelwald Switzerland 

What? A Swiss family hotel with spa facilities and children's ski programmes. On New Year's Eve the Grindelwaldans appear on the streets with cow bells and proceed from bar to bar whilst ringing in the New Year. There are also fireworks.

2. The Scullery Lime Wood Hotel, New Forest, UK

What? Lime Wood Hotel is a Five Star luxury hotel and spa in the middle of the UK's New Forest. On New Year's Eve it's running a party in the scullery involving a four course meal.  You can bring pets (albeit not to the party).

Cost: The party in the scullery is £95 per head. A spa treatment will cost £185+.  Rooms are £245+, but may already be booked.

3. The Bull Hotel, Bridport, UK

What? A family-oriented Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel in Dorset, UK. Offers a New Year's Eve meal and a party in its accompanying Stable Bar.

Cost: New Year's Eve Menu is £50 per person.  Hotel guests are given free entry to the cocktail bar and stable party.
