INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: Morgan Stanley, operations, placement year internship

Question:

Where do you see yourself after this placement (if you got it) in 5 years’ time?

Student’s answer:

I talked about how I could see myself progressing up in the firm within the division, given my current skillset I think I could make a good manager and so this would be the first part. I said how I would find it hard to pin point specifically in 5 years’ time due to the fact I am still learning and so, whilst I think I could progress up the ladder, considering the dynamics of financial services, I think it could be possible that I could change departments or outlooks, hopefully still under the Morgan Stanley.

Question:

Name a time you have had to make a tough decision and how did you deal with this?

Student’s answer:

I ran an Enterprise society at the time of applying, so this made my answer easier as I had to let someone go who was involved. I spoke about the course I took, showing understanding and trying to see what the issue the person was facing in performing in the society, from this, I then talked about how after a few meetings and chances given, I had to ask him to leave, I ensured this was a process that gave constructive criticism as no one likes to be told they are no good at something. So I played down the fact he was doing so poorly, and focused on; we need someone with a bit more involvement and I can see you are finding the process of adapting hard, so I think it would be best if you stand down from the post. Never an easy call to make, but I ensured we stay friends, something I kept too!

Question:

Name a time you have been entrepreneurial and what did you learn from this?

Student’s answer:

As well as running the society, I had run my own on line clothing business prior to university. I explained the fundamental skill gains I learnt, and also that it changed my mindset, being on the other side of the table, trying to get the best out of people, something I pointed out they were now doing. I found myself having an edge to others when applying myself in a working environment, due to the fact I understood what employers want and expect from an individual.
