This is who JPMorgan really wants to hire in Glasgow now

You don't always need financial services experience to get into investment banking. J.P. Morgan's technology centre in Glasgow is looking for apps developers - and will consider people from outside financial services.

Paul Murphy, head of J.P. Morgan's European Technology Centre (ETC) in Glasgow, says: "If you are an apps developer who enjoys coming up with new ideas we want to hear from you."

The ETC is looking for five to ten mobile apps developers to add to its team of 25 over the next year. They will be developing mobile apps for J.P. Morgan’s investment bank and asset and wealth management arms.

Candidates do not always need financial sector experience (though it helps). Murphy is willing to consider people from non-financial sectors, such as the games industry.

"Innovation is what keeps us competitive in our business, so if you enjoy developing new iOS and Android apps, you could transfer in, and become part of a team that includes people with extensive financial services experience," he says. The bank also offers ongoing training to all recruits.

"Many of the apps are built as internal productivity tools for use on iPads, future models of the iPhone and Android devices. They are typically used by senior executives and staff who visit clients to present corporate data and presentations," says Murphy.

As well as the right technical skills, applicants will need to show that they combine an enthusiasm for technology and banking.

The ETC also recruits around 10-15 graduates annually, mainly with degrees in computer science, engineering and sciences, and the firm offers a summer internship to students between their third and fourth years. At the end of the ten week internship, they are offered the chance to attend an assessment centre, which typically results in around 60 per cent being offered graduate jobs.

When it comes to new recruits, including graduates, Murphy says: 'We look for well rounded personalities who thrive under pressure - self-starting hard workers who will not settle for second best.

"We like people who push the boundaries, not wallflowers. We expect you to have and express your own opinions - and we'll test that at interview."

The growth at J.P. Morgan in Glasgow comes despite reports some time ago that the bank was considering reducing its headcount in the city, but Murphy describes these reports as ‘unfounded’.
