Nomura’s head of recruitment says new UK immigration rules haven’t affected his ability to hire Russian graduates

If you’re a Russian student who wants to go and work in the UK after graduation, life is harder than it used to be. The UK has imposed new immigration rules and a cap on the number of non-EU citizens who can work in the country.

However, Malcolm Horton, head of recruitment at Nomura, says the new rules haven’t really made that much difference. Nomura still wants to hire Russian students in London, says Horton. And it’s still able to quite easily.

“It’s more paperwork to employ people from outside the European Union, but we don’t really get turned down,” he told us. “Yes, there’s a quota limiting the amount of non-EU people we can employ, but no one ever gets close to reaching it. It’s not really a problem.”

Horton says there are still a lot of Russians who apply for graduate trainee positions in London. “We have a number of spots for people who speak Russian. But I have far more spots for people who can speak German.”
