If you hassle about your CV within 5 days of applying, you are in a desperate minority
You send in your CV in application for a job advertisement which you consider yourself eminently suited for. Two days later you have heard nothing. Three days later, you have heard nothing. Five days later, you have heard nothing. One week later, you have heard nothing
When do you start to chase?
New research from Robert Half (admittedly not finance specific but from a little known subsidiary called OfficeTeam), suggests that if you chase too soon, you will simply identify yourself as one of a desperate and impatient minority of candidates.
In the UK, it found:
11% of candidates chase their application only 1-3 days after sending it in.
18% of candidates wait 4 to 5 days
25% wait 6 to 7 days
12% wait 8 to 10 days
20% wait 11 to 14 days
And 13% wait for more than 2 weeks.
Robert Half recommends that candidates wait 8-10 days before chasing up their applications. This will give employers time to process them.
Dr. Rob Yeung, a director at leadership consulting firm Talentspace suggests you may not wish to chase your application at all. “To be honest, if you are a strong candidate an employer will not lose your details and will get in touch as quickly as their process will allow them to,” he points out. “If they haven’t got back to you, they still may be waiting for applications to come in or you simply aren’t a sufficiently strong candidate.”
