Disaster for RBS's 3,000 Edinburgh professionals if Scotland becomes independent?
Scottish independence could prove a bad thing if you work at RBS.
According to Professor Charles Goodhart, an economist who was formerly on the Bank of England's monetary policy committee, an independent Scotland would lack the financial wherewithal to underpin RBS. Because of this, he says: "RBS would probably need to shift to London."
It's also unclear how a British government which has bailed out RBS would feel about the bank's HQ remaining in Edinburgh. Alex Salmond has said he wouldn't accept any share of RBS's liabilities in the event that Scotland becomes independent.
RBS's global HQ at Gogarburn, West Edinburgh, is thought to house around 3,000 staff.
