Tricky interview question: Why do you want to work in operations when you could get paid five times more as a corporate banker?

The question

A candidate for a management-trainee position at a commercial bank was asked to choose between three departments that interested him: finance, corporate banking and operations. He chose operations.

The interviewer then said: "Why didn't you choose corporate banking or finance, which might give you five times the salary of yours in operations?"

The candidate's reply

I chose it because I would love to learn more about the operational side of a financial institution, rather than learning the financial side, which I don't have much interest in.

How he would have responded in hindsight

Financial and corporate are very attractive to me as well. Because I will be a trainee, I will have lots of opportunities to learn from different departments during my progress, so I am sure there will be chances to experience the other two sectors, and I might like to work in them in the future.

How would YOU have answered?

never worked in ops but i think most ppl there seem nice... corporate banking (i.e. lending / relationship management) is not really glam (just ask your asshole ibanker cousin) and salaries are more like up to 2x ops when starting out... ibankers though do make 5 times more but work double the hours under constant pressure (no ciggie breaks or idle chatter ever) so when measured on a salary / output basis no incremental gain compared to ops...

Why on earth would you choose to work in operations? It is one of the most under-paid career destroying jobs on the planet. Banks only manage to fill positions in ops by hinting that one day the person may make it to the front office. When of course most never will.

The only people who choose a long term career there are people who realise this too late in life and are then stuck there.

Its almost criminal that banks do this to people!

I prefer corporate banking, to climb the mountain from the base to stop where I finished my strength
