Late Lunchtime Links: Should you be trying to get a job at Jefferies?

On one hand, Jefferies shares are down 14% and it's had to issue a statement saying that it, 'currently has no meaningful exposure to the sovereign debt of the nations of Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain.' On the other, Jefferies is hiring. Most recently, it's hired Guy Cornelius. This is the same Guy Cornelius who only joined Nomura in February 2010 and has decided to move swiftly on.

In September, Jefferies said it was being prudent about hiring. But since then, headhunters say it's been doing a lot of interviewing. "They've been talking to a lot of people," says one fixed income consultant. "They seem to be looking to jump on big names in this moment of vulnerability."

So should you be trying to get a job there? Maybe, given that it appears to be the only place hiring. But maybe not, given its results aren't too great. In the third quarter, fixed income sales and trading revenues at Jefferies plummeted 79% year-on-year and 85% quarter-on-quarter. Some people have questioned the sustainability of its build, but in September Jefferies said bankers were queuing up to work there.
