It seems MF Global's tech employees have a better chance than most of finding a new job

MF Global's employees are, of course, in the unfortunate position of losing their jobs in a very depressed market where few firms have an appetite to hire. However, some of its technology team are having better luck finding a new position.

In the UK, MF Global has cut 435 people and retained 300 to help wind down the company over the next few months. This means the majority of people at the firm will find themselves on the streets when most banks are firing, rather than hiring.

It's estimated that MF Global had around 150 people working in its UK tech team on various projects when it collapsed. IT recruitment has been badly affected by the downturn, but - comparatively speaking - there are still a decent number of roles available.

Not surprisingly, IT in finance recruiters are reporting an influx of CVs from technologists at the firm. More surprisingly, some headhunters scouring MF Global for potential tech talent have discovered that they've already found re-employment.

"I was looking for database analyst role and had approached around nine people previously working at MF Global and, astonishingly, they've already been re-hired," says one IT in finance headhunter. "The firm has a mixture of vendor packages - and therefore has some good Fidessa specialists, who are still in demand - as well as building in-house, and there were a lot of good technologists there."

The people gaining new positions were more rank-and-file employees rather than anyone in a CIO position, he adds.

Another recruiter tells us that they've seen a lot of CVs from MF Global technologists in recent weeks, and that a number have been scheduled for interview in other banks.

"Obviously, in the current climate no one is snapping them up," he says. "But clients are still interested in hearing from MF Global technology staff, as there's still a lot of respect for their skills."

This is because they have acutal skills. Attending a desk, sitting on a swivel chair and moving numbers on a spreadsheet or doing other clerical duties, which is what most office workers do, while chatting about last night's telly, doesn't constitute a transferrable skill.

If one needed another proof that markets are not very efficient ...
