Discover your dream Career
For Recruiters

Is it really this impossible to find any other job now?

In case you haven't seen it, it's worth drawing your attention to the terrible plight of someone claiming to be a former trader at a tier one bank who left a comment on an article last week.

They described their situation as follows (we have tidied up the English a little):

30 years old. Trader at Tier 1 bank. Life is good.

Phonecall. Redundancy.

Think it'll be ok. Can just trade at a smaller firm. If the poop really hits the fan, can be flexible on salary etc..

11 months later. No job. No money. No recruiters will return my calls. No acknowledgement that anyone has received my emailed job applications. No response to the hundreds of texts I've sent asking about vacancies.

Agencies laugh at me when I apply for middle/back office: "We don't do traders".

Need to eat. Apply for customer service roles on Reed. Number of applicants to each of such jobs: 400+

Apply for receptionist jobs: "Good CV but do u have telephone answering experience" (NO JOKE!)

No money for this month's rent. Bank is realising that I don't have a job and wants to "help me" manage my debts by reducing my overdraft and credit card limits suddenly. Best way to do this: wait until I put some money in my account then suddenly cut my overdraft by the amount I just paid in.

I'm smart, driven, a fast learner, and extremely good with people, proactive and tenacious.

Will anybody give me a job???

IS IT REALLY THIS BAD?????

''Agencies laugh at me when I apply for middle/back office: "We don't do traders". ''

This one happened to me too. I am a trader as well. I must confess that when I first heard it on the phone, I was really shocked. In my head, going from trading to middle/back office was already a step down, therefore they should immediately hire me. What I failed to realise at the time was that I had no idea what people do in these jobs, and that trading experience was not exactly relevant.

Another thing I noticed is that the big egos, increased aggressiveness, and other personal attributes that are the ''norm'' on trading floors, are not considered equally normal by the outside world. This is a tough one to deal with, because by the time you realise it,you may not remember how to be any different. Prob is, that if you really want a job, you'll have to change this. Don't ask me how, I am still trying with extremely moderate success.

YES, IT IS REALLY THAT BAD! And we tend to make it worse sometimes, but I do see where you're coming from. Best of luck!

When an ex trader who has been redundent turns to becoming an IT help desk advisor- things are bad. But the bills have to be paid regardless.

    In answer to your question:

YES THINGS ARE VERY, VERY, VERY BAD!!!!

I have got to the stage where i actually hate going to interviews because the probability of NOT getting the job is far greater than ever before! Statistics show that stress levels, suicide and death rates are on the rise. Nice one Cameron!

@chanak: AHAHAHA! You are living on another planet if you think the ratio of job interviews to applications is 1:15. Adding a zero on the end to make it 1:150 is a bit more realistic right now. And that is on a wildly optimistic and deliriously happy day. Sorry.

@John: Shameless self-promotion works for celebrities, so why not? That's a good idea you've had there.

Good luck fella! It's tough out there but remember to keep sharp, make sure you continue reading up on the markets and network as much as possible! Time to think outside the box? Don't get constrained, no mortgage and no wife, the worlds your oyster!!
