Here's how much you must earn to fall within the top 1% of UK taxpayers

Along with every other journalist in London, we made a detour this week to visit the protestors camping in the cold outside St. Paul's Cathedral.

Along with other journalists at other protests we concluded that the crowd was disproportionately young, global, and unsurprisingly anti-capitalist.

Interestingly, however, most of the protestors we spoke to considered the 1% of people they're protesting against to be earning far more money than they actually are.

As we said in February, you will fall into the top 1% of UK income taxpayers if you earn

anything more than 149k.

A quick straw poll of protestors suggested they imagine the top 1% to start at people earning seven figures, with most guessing 2m+. Only one, a 50 year old recently unemployed social worker guessed the 1% starting point correctly. "The income tax system should be like the 1970s," he suggested, "30% tax below 150k; 90% above."

Income is largely irrelevant for most top earners. To take an extreme example, and a non-UK one at that, Warren Buffett has taken a salary of 100,000USD flat for decades with zero bonus. You need to factor in stock awards, options, outsized pension contributions etc.

Ignore political economy at your peril. i.e. if you don't account for distribution of income it will come and bite you in the arse. Whatever you earn can be taxed. Whatever wealth you have accumulated can be taken away. Swagger around like a pratt and watch your political support disappear followed by you income and lifestyle

Peasants.... I suggest we get them out on the roads in the winter, laying the grit on the snow and ice....

That way I can continue driving my lambo to the office and they will be adding some form of use to London!!!!

this article is silly because the "real" top 1% are not income tax payer, this is merely the top 1% of salaried plebs (myself included)... the super rich (business owners, hedge fund managers entrepreneurs etc etc), will barely pay income tax, merely capital gains tax on those earnings they havent manage to divert offshore

the top 1% UK taxpayers is not the top 1% the protest is targeting. That top 1% doesn't pay taxes at all because their income is from dividends or capital gains allocated to holding companies, located in other countries. The real top 1% doesn't pay any taxes. I agree with the message of the article that the top 1% UK tax payers are not rich but temporary middle class (as long as they stay employed at same salary level...), but the protest is not against them
