Tricky interview question: What would you do with a million bricks?

The question

During an interview for a fixed-income job at a global investment bank in Australia, a candidate was asked the following question: What would you do with a million bricks? Tell me as many uses as you can think of in two minutes, starting now.

The candidate's reply

I don't know. I might first count them to see if I really have a million bricks. Um...I could kung fu chop them to see how long it would take to break them all. Um...I might exchange portions of the bricks for services like plumbing, bricklaying, fence building and painting to see if I could get a full house built. I don't know, I might send them to Africa to help build a community medical centre. Or I could give them to you to see what you would do.

How he would have responded in hindsight

I should not have said "I don't know" twice. There were no right or wrong answers. The interviewer was trying to gauge if I could think on my feet, how clearly I could communicate and if I was a creative problem solver. I did not get the job. Actually, the position was never filled. It was at the peak of the GFC and the bank issued a hiring freeze which continued for almost a year.

I'd use my huge inventory to spoof the market

I would find a low cost secure location to store the bricks to build a house with in the future or weigh up various other options. The questions that I would ask assuming the bricks were house bricks and given to me for free! What type of bricks are they? Are they free with no debt attached? Who owns the bricks and the story behind the bricks? How much time do I have to move the bricks? What is the storage area required to store the bricks? Are they new or second hand? Are the bricks on pallets? What is the address of the bricks and the contact details for the owner or the distibutor of the bricks? What would be a fair finders fee for the bricks or a sugested good deed in return for the bricks? These questions would be asked assuming I would be interested in aquiring the bricks, prior to calculating significant value or purpose for the bricks. Thanks for the bricks...What would you do with 1 million blueberries?

Throw it at the interviewer for asking such a stupid question

It might seem odd at first, but what I would do with "A Million Bricks" is watch it, as it is a movie about the Troubles, and consider how quickly a peaceful situation can go horribly wrong - something quite relevant to the financial world!
